Top 10 Criteria for a Killer Website

Top 10 Criteria for a Killer Website

Your website is still the start of the relationship with a customer. But the rules have changed. Let’s unpack the Killer Website Criteria that separate high-performing B2B sites from those invisible to humans and AI alike.

Today, it’s not only people judging your site; it’s Google’s AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT, and every other assistant scraping and summarising. If your site doesn’t tick the right boxes, you’ll vanish from search results, lose trust with buyers, and get left behind.

Here are the 10 non-negotiables for B2B websites:

1. Everybody’s Different: Create Personas

killer website criteria

Some people skim. Some dive deep. Some know exactly what they want, others browse like it’s a Sunday market. You can’t design for everyone, but you can design for your top three personas.

How to do it:

            • Workshop your personas using Jobs To Be Done: what tasks are they trying to complete?
            • Map journeys that solve their goals fast.
            • Balance detail (for procurement managers) with punchy CTAs (for time-poor execs).

Priority: Personas aren’t static, revisit them yearly. Buying cycles are shifting with AI search, remote work, and procurement platforms.

2. First Impressions in the Killer Website Criteria

You have five seconds (if you’re lucky). In that blink, a visitor, or an AI bot, decides if you’re relevant.

Visitors ask:

  • What are you selling? Say it in plain language.
  • Do I belong here? Show people like me.
  • What’s in it for me? Make the benefit clear.
  • What’s next? Give me a visible button.

Priority: AI assistants scrape your headers and first paragraphs. If your value prop isn’t crystal clear there, you won’t make it into summaries or entity panels.

3. Homepage Must-Haves from the Killer Website Criteria

Think of your homepage as the one-page pitch deck. Buyers won’t click through your site hunting for whitepapers or proof points, they expect everything summarised upfront.

Your homepage should tick several of the Killer Website Criteria; from client logos and proof points to structured FAQ snippets.

What to include:

  • Logos of clients, certifications, awards.
  • Reviews, testimonials, case studies.
  • Clear service/product summaries.
  • FAQ snippets with schema for AI answers.

Priority: Infinite scroll is fine, just guide the flow. Use sticky CTAs and anchor links.

4. Don’t Make Me Click

Click = friction. Every extra click loses up to 20% of visitors. Scrolling feels safer.

How to reduce clicks:

  • Long-form scrollable pages.
  • Mega menus instead of waterfall dropdowns.
  • A sticky navigation bar and clear breadcrumbs.
  • A big fat search bar.

Priority: Accessibility is non-negotiable. Every button needs proper labels, focus states, and keyboard navigation to meet WCAG 2.2.

5. Your Shop Front (eCommerce or Service)

Even if you’re B2B, your homepage is your shop window. Don’t hide your best sellers, flagship services, or case studies.

eCommerce must-haves:

  • One-page checkout.
  • Apple Pay, Google Pay.
  • PDP essentials: reviews, specs, delivery/returns.
  • High-res images in WebP/AVIF for speed.

Priority: B2B services should mimic this: show pricing ranges, delivery timelines, guarantees.

6. Search & Findability

Some buyers want to browse. Others want a search box. Give both.

What to add:

  • A clear “All Products/All Services” page.
  • Powerful on-site search (with autosuggest).
  • Schema markup for products, FAQs, HowTos.
  • Consistent NAP (Name/Address/Phone) across web profiles for entity building.

Priority: Entity Optimisation (EO) is the new SEO. Build a digital footprint; LinkedIn page, industry directories, press mentions; so AI assistants actually know who you are.

7. Test, Then Test Again

Launching untested websites is like sending out a CV with typos.

Testing means:

  • Prototype testing with at least 5 users.
  • GA4 event tracking for every key action.
  • Heatmaps & session replays (Hotjar, Clarity).
  • CRO experiments before and after launch.

Priority: It’s cheaper to fix wording in Figma than code in dev. Don’t skip testing.

8. Don’t Break the Rules

Users expect menus top-right, logos top-left, and cart icons top-right. Move them and people get lost.

The golden rules:

  • Keep navigation conventional.
  • Breadcrumbs, back buttons, and obvious CTAs.
  • Keep forms short and clear.

Priority: Bake in accessibility from the start:

  • Minimum 44x44px touch targets.
  • 3:1 colour contrast ratio.
  • Descriptive link text (“Download brochure,” not “Click here”).

9. Core Web Vitals: Speed and Performance in the Killer Website Criteria

Most research starts on mobile, but B2B conversions often finish on desktop. Your site needs to serve both.

Fast load times and mobile-first layouts aren’t optional; they’re part of the Killer Website Criteria that Google and your buyers both demand.

Performance basics:

  • Optimise for Core Web Vitals:
    • LCP < 2.5s
    • CLS < 0.1
    • INP < 200ms
  • Use fast hosting/CDN.
  • Compress with WebP/AVIF.
  • Lazy load images & video.
  • Critical CSS for faster rendering.

Priority: Google rewards good Web Vitals in rankings. Bad scores = buried site.

10. SEO to EO/AEO

SEO isn’t dead. But it’s not enough.

Still essential:

  • Keyword research and content clusters.
  • Authoritative, useful long-form content.
  • Backlinks from trusted sources.

What’s new:

  • EO (Everything Optimisation): build brand identity across the web.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation): structure content so AI assistants can quote you directly.
  • Use schema (FAQ, HowTo, Product, Organization).
  • Digital PR for brand mentions.

Priority: If your brand isn’t an entity AI trusts, you won’t show up in AI answers; even if you rank on Google.

Why the Killer Website Criteria Matter

Your website in 2025 isn’t just a digital shop window; it’s your salesperson, your trust builder, and your AI-visible brand entity. Ignore these 10 criteria and you’ll be invisible. Nail them, and you’ll keep winning business long after the click.

If your site can’t pass the Killer Website Criteria 2025, it’s time to rethink it before competitors steal the clicks.
