As a leader of an industrial business, you’re used to adapting to new technologies that impact your business. But AI isn’t just a part of your business operations. The old way – SEO – means getting your website found on search engines like Google. But Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the new approach that makes sure your content is the one AI tools, like ChatGPT, use when answering important queries about your products or services.

Because ChatGPT has over 180.5 million monthly active users (Singh, 2025), while Perplexity AI’s search volume has surged and now boasts around 10 million active monthly users (Duarte, 2025).

What’s SEO?

SEO is all about getting your website noticed by search engines like Google. When someone searches for a service you offer, you want to show up at the top, right? That’s SEO in action. 

SEO helps you reach more people organically, meaning no paid ads. You get the traffic that’s actively searching for what you offer. It’s an investment in the long-term growth of your business.

The basics:

  • On-page SEO: This is about optimizing your content, from keywords to meta descriptions.
  • Off-page SEO: Things like backlinks and social proof help build your website’s authority.
  • Technical SEO: Getting your site to load fast and work smoothly on any device.

What is Generative Engine Optimization or GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization is about making sure your content gets seen by AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT, Google AI, and other generative platforms. These AIs don’t just give users a list of links like traditional search engines do – they generate direct, personalized responses to questions. 

Think of it as your content being the “answer” in these conversations. It’s not just about being found, it’s about making sure the AI picks your content as the best response to the user’s query.

How does GEO work?

GEO and similar AI systems are designed to understand and synthesize information in ways that traditional search engines can’t. They look beyond keywords, diving deep into context, intent, and meaning, to generate helpful answers.

1. Data collection

Generative engines start by gathering huge amounts of data from various sources, like websites, books, social media platforms, research papers, and other publicly available information. This data is preprocessed to make sure it’s clean and usable. Think of this as the AI “learning” stage, where it absorbs all the knowledge it can.

2. Training the model

Once the data is collected, the system is trained using machine learning. During this process, the AI looks for patterns and relationships in the data, understanding how different pieces of information are related to each other. For example, it learns what words typically go together, how certain topics are connected, and the context behind a user’s query.

3. Natural language processing (NLP)

Once the AI has learned from the data, it uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand and interpret human language. This is the core of what makes these AI systems “smart”. They break down text and recognize the meaning of sentences, not just the individual words.

For example, if you ask an AI, “How do I fix a leaky faucet?”, it doesn’t just look for pages that mention “leaky” and “faucet”. It understands the context of the question, the intent behind the words, and the task you want done. This allows the AI to give more precise answers instead of just a list of results.

4. Generating responses

Now, when you type a query, the AI uses what it has learned to generate a response. This is where generative comes in, unlike traditional search engines that just display links to webpages, generative AI creates new content based on the data it has processed.

The AI takes the context of your query, pulls together the most relevant information from its data bank, and then synthesizes a response that is clear, coherent, and contextually accurate. 

5. Optimization and fine-tuning

As AI systems are used, they constantly improve through feedback loops. These systems learn from user interactions and refine their responses over time. For example, if users regularly find an answer unhelpful or irrelevant, the AI might adjust its future responses to better fit user needs. It’s like the AI is constantly getting smarter with each interaction.

6. Prioritizing information

Generative AI also decides which pieces of information to prioritize when crafting a response. It cares about relevance, accuracy, and context. Of course, there are always exceptions (read: the AI-written spam frequently seen on position #1 of Google) but ultimately, the goal remains the same: give users the best answers to their questions. 

7. Answer presentation

Finally, the way the answer is presented is also important. Generative engines like GEO might not only give you a text answer, but could also integrate images, videos, or even interactive elements to make the response more comprehensive. 

How do you optimize for GEO?

1. Understand how AI thinks

First things first, AI engines like ChatGPT or Google AI don’t just look for keywords, they analyze the context of a question and the meaning behind it. 

2. Create content that AI can use

For your content to get picked up by AI engines, it needs to be:

  • Contextually accurate: Answer the question directly and give enough detail to satisfy user intent.
  • Semantic: Think beyond single keywords. Use natural language, long-tail questions, and related terms that the AI might connect together.
  • Comprehensive: Provide in-depth answers. If AI is going to pull your content, it needs to be detailed enough to generate a full, helpful response.

3. Make it multimodal

AI isn’t just processing text anymore. This means you need to mix up your content. 

Don’t just write articles. Add visuals, videos, and even audio clips when relevant. It makes your content more likely to get picked up by AI because it offers a complete answer that covers different formats.

4. Use structured data

Think of structured data (like schema markup) as a roadmap for AI engines. It helps AI systems understand the relationship between different pieces of information on your page. For example, if you’re writing about a product, structured data helps the AI understand things like pricing, reviews, or availability without it having to dig through the whole page.

5. Focus on user intent

AI engines are great at understanding user intent. That’s the reason behind a search. Whether someone is looking for information, how-to guides, or making a purchase decision, GEO helps you tailor your content to those needs. 

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

In SEO, you optimize for traditional search engines (Google, Bing, etc.) to improve rankings in search results pages (SERPs). In GEO, you optimize for AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT, which generate direct answers to user queries.

Is GEO replacing SEO?
